Bridging the Divide

The Assam Tribune

Aizawl, July 20, 2007 (PTI): Hundreds of non-tribals stranded at Vairengte market in Mizoram returned to their homes today following the easing of tensions caused by the killing of a Mizo youth allegedly by Bengali-speaking people in neighbouring Assam.

All Bengali-speaking people stranded at Vairengte since yesterday had returned to their respective villages, Kolasib’s Superintendent of Police Lalbiakthanga Khiangte told PTI on phone from Vairengte.

The situation at Vairengte, home to hundreds of Bengali- speaking people, too was returning to normal, he said.

Tension had mounted at Vairengte and in State capital Aizawl after news spread of the murder of 26-year-old Kapliana at Dholai in Cachar district on Wednesday night.

Activists of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) or Mizo Students Federation asked all non-tribals to remain indoors for their own safety and restrained hundreds of Bengali-speaking people, who came to Vairengte market yesterday, from leaving the village as some people in Cachar had blocked NH 54 and were not allowing Kapliana’s body to be brought to Mizoram.
